St Henri is an intriguing counterpart to Grange and a time-honored and alternative expression of shiraz. It is unique among high-quality Australian red wines in that it does not use any new wood. Penfolds first released it in the early 1950s (first commercial vintage 1957), and it acquired a new lease on life in the 1990s as its quality and distinct character became more widely recognized.
When fresh, St Henri is rich and fluffy, but as it ages, it develops soft, earthy, mocha-like characteristics. It is aged in a variety of antique huge vats that allow the wine to grow while adding little, if any, oak character. Although a little amount of cabernet may find its way into the blend, the focus of St Henri remains shiraz.
