It's exciting to be blown away by something new, and that's exactly what happened when we first tried this. This is the second vintage of Verdelho made by Guillaume Nell, one of South Africa's fascinating new generation of winemakers (buyers went crazy for the first vintage when word spread) and, with a production of 1568 bottles, you can understand why it doesn't last long when released. An enticing aroma of baked apple strudel, honey, citrus, and peach leads to a breathtaking waxy, textured palate. The fruit is complemented by a creamy note (from lees ageing), decent acidity, and a tannic-like bit of grip, which is unusual in a white but contributes to the experience. It's long, tasty, complex, unique, and difficult to find, so it checks all of our boxes. If you prefer white Rhone or Chardonnay, or just good wine in general, pick up a bottle or two before it's gone.
