Tignanello was the first Sangiovese matured in barriques, the first current red wine combined with untraditional types (particularly Cabernet), and one of the first Chianti Classico red wines that did not employ white grapes. Tignanello is a watershed moment. It is made from a blend of Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Cabernet Franc.
The medium ruby red hue is thick and holds up beautifully to the rim. Red cherry notes with a high tone are layered over chocolatey richness and a hint of wood. The flavors are bitter red cherry with delicate chocolatey-smooth tannins. The wine has a medium-to-full body. The acidity is tantalizing. The alcohol is slightly warming. The finish is lengthy and thick, opening to reveal luscious black cherry near the conclusion.
